Canadian writer Tiffany Ford interviewed 20 Year Music Industry Veteran Billy Evans of Richmond, Virginia about his opinions on the state of the music industry today, and lyrical content.

TF: Billy Evans inyour music, what are the subjects in your songs you like to write about?

BE: I write about love, peace, war, spirituality, dreams and some of my ownpersonal experiences. For example my song entitled "Let's be Close Tonight" was personal.

TF: When you have an idea for a song, do you stop everything you aredoing to start writing on it?

BE: The most challenging part of writing is thebeginning. I have gotten out of bed on several
occasions to recordan idea that I had for a new song. I've learned the hard way that if you
wait until themorning, it will be history.

TF: Do you listen to rap music?

BE: No! I don't listento rap and not because I don't think that it is a legitimate art. There
are some verytalented and gifted rappers in the business that have invested a lot of
blood sweat andtears perfecting the craft. Kudos to the rappers. Personally for me,
I enjoy melodies,colors and excellent musicianship when I listen to music.

TF. Do you feel like music today doesn't emphasis on lyrical content oris it more about a beat?

BE: Not necessarily.There is lyrical content in the music of today. The question
is whether or notthe content is positive, poetic, risque, overly seductive, meaningful
abusive, vulgar, orjust down right stupid.

TF: Does music have to have meaningful lyrics to be meaningful?

BE: No! it's sort oflike 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder'. What may be meaningful
to one person maynot be meaningful to another. What's important to me may not
be important toyou. Someone that grew up in the hood, surrounded by drugs, drive by's
and gangbanging, would appreciate listening to a song about that more than I would.

TF: What’s the difference in today's music compared with the music youheard when you were growing up?

BE: The music that Iheard when I was growing up was cleaner, more melodic and poetic. It wascharacterized by a completely different value system. The opposite sex wasrespected and not called bitches and whores. The black family, thoughstill in impoverished circumstances still believed in spirituality, modesty, hard workand love. There are several reasons why substance in mainstream musichas taken a back seat. Capitalism, lack of free speech, censorship in ourconstitution. Internet, and the deterioration of the family.

TF: Did lyrics in music influence you as you were growing up?

BE: I didn't become a lyricist until I began writing music. What influencedme was the way that Iwas raised by my parents, and the church background that I receivedfrom day one. I was however very intrigued by writers like Hal David, whocollaborated with Burt Bacharach and wrote splendid music for Dione Warwick,and Cole Porter.

TF: Do you feel a lot of people confused sex with love in music?

BE: That question wouldhave to be broken down into which genre of music you are referringto. I have absolutely no problems with sexual overtones or themes in musicas long as it is done with taste and class. As long as there is a courtinggoing on, as long as it's not offensive, and as long as it still respects the man orwomen. I was a big fan of Marvin Gaye and "Let's Get it On", was lyricallybrilliant and funky. There is no confusion in today's music because there isnothing left for the imagination.

TF: What makes a good song writer?

BE: What makes a goodsong writer or musician is natural ability,study, practice,discipline, and being eclectic.

TF: Does lyrics make a song, ordoes a good sound make the song?

BE: In today's musicmarket, monetary backing and publicity makes a song. "Lolly Pop", by Lil Wayne is aperfect example of that. However, it's my professional opinion that for mainstream Pop,R&B, and Rap, a simple beat can take precedence over lyrics. It's stillimportant that a song is well produced with regard to sound regardless of the lyrics.

The Musical Cut OFF: Age Discrimination in the Music Industry

In theentertainment world, the constant search for the next new young, talent ishighlighted on the trends of music based reality shows; X-Factor, AmericanIdol, The Sing Off, The Voice and more. Scores of people flock to auditiondates in their home towns all over the globe in hopes of being discovered, and acquirefame with fortune.

Alltypes of individuals audition, and usually the younger, more marketable groupof individuals are chosen to reach the next round, and battle it out on theshow to millions of viewers at home. They are later subjected to not only the scrutinyof the judges, but must appeal to the mass audience, which cast their votes forthe more appealing contestant through social media networks or through mobiletechnology.

59Year-old veteran singer and song-writer Leroy Bell recently astonished thejudges, audience, and viewers at home with his audition in Seattle forX-Factor. The baby-faced, modern-dressed vocalist stunned everyone with hisage. How could it be such an attractive young-looking man is almost 60 yearsold? Not to mention, how can he have had such a lengthy career in the musicindustry, opening for such acts as Sheryl Crow, BB. King and writing songs forthe likes of Elton John, yet still end up auditioning for X-Factor?

Why isage such a big deal? LeRoy Bell can evidently sing, he has been in the musicindustry for decades, and now he is ready to make a larger presence in hiscareer by using a great platform that appeals to millions. Due to his age it isconsidered his final attempt to ultimate stardom. Ultimately, he got throughthe competition but the emphasis on his age every week, highlights him as arare contestant, and his age is almost a taboo attribute.

Thereare a number of people that have worked behind the scenes for years, and finallygot their break. Kanye West, The Dream and singer Miguel are a few we canmention, that ended up doing very well after a lengthy period of creating hitsfor their peers. Yet, they all have one thing in common, they are still aroundan acceptable age, and both their looks and musical content is still consideredmarketable to the mass consumers.

What isthe acceptable age limit, where your musical aspirations are deem in theirlatter years, or cut off? Billy Evans, a Richmond, Virginia singer, pianist andsongwriter with twenty year of experience in the music industry suggests,“Music doesn’t have an age limit. It is a universal appeal for all mankind, andevery listener discriminates differently on what they are attracted to insounds, voice and appearance.”

So, whydoes the music industry seem to solely be interested in getting the next JustinBieber, Katy Perry, Jay Z, or Rihanna? Getting back to the hit show X-Factor,LeRoy Bell was up against very young artists like 15 year old rapper Astro, and13 year old vocalist Rachel Crow, who ultimately surpassed him in thecompetition. The youngest talents always seem to get the support of the audienceand judges, almost as if we are socialized to support young adolescents intheir aspirations, but not taking away the fact that these young artists aregood. Where does that leave LeRoy Bell?Perhaps, it leaves him with acceptance that his career is now officially over,but should it?

Ultimately,it all comes down to money. The music buyer dominates the industry, and as theeconomic sphere of the music industry is bleak due to the near collapse of theindustry from the days of Napster, and online music file-sharing. The musicindustry cannot, and will not take any risks.

AsBilly Evans, has taken the step to release his debut album after twenty-yearsof being in the music industry entitled “Angel of Mercy”, he is aware that major music labels areonly signing artists and bands that either have already sold thousands of unitsor have captivated audiences on shows like the X- Factor or American idol. Hefeels that as a producer, writer, musician and singer, his music has universalappeal. That is why he and many others have started their own independentrecord labels and distribute their music online and in select stores.

"I've been fortunate to perform for dignitaries, play in the homesof corporate executives and get booked on shows with names such as Bill Cosbyand the Whispers, all without a major record label contract. When you love whatyou do it becomes more about the music than the fame and notoriety. It alsominimizes the risk. People appreciate my music and talent for what it is,”states Billy Evans.

Therefore,should an older artist worry that they may not be what the music market wantsat this time? Due to the music market being volatile, and characterized by "hittoday, gone tomorrow", older artists that are great writers andtechnicians shouldn't worry about if they are what the market wants at anygiven time. Longevity is the key. There will always be a market for artistlike: George Benson, Bob James, Stevie wonder, Joe Sample and Billy Evans. Goodmusic is still good music. These artists are successful because they don't tryto fit into the current trends of our latest music stars.

On November 6, 2010 at Pacha Lounge (1305 Dundas Street West, Toronto), KAMOCEAN.com will be launched to the public, along with a Benefit Concert and Video Dance Party. The events include a variety of entertainment including 2 DJs, 2 hosts, performances by MTV's Gilson Lubin, Kim Davis, Art of Fresh, Natosh Monroe, Natasha Waterman, LEH-LO, Nadine Williamson, Jean Paul and many more

Event 1: Launch (4:30P.M.-9P.M.)

The Unveiling Launch is the first event of the evening, featuring popular comedians and poets such as Gilson Lubin, Jean Paul, Nadine Williams and more. Catered hors d'oeuvres by Comida World Foods, music provided by DJ Carl Allen and hosted by Suzanne Coy (The Kink in My Hair, Dan for Mayor). Doors open at 4:30P.M, and the event begins at 5:30P.M. The cost for the Unveiling Launch and comedy, poetry show is $30 (advance) $35 (at the door).

Event 2: Benefit Concert (9P.M. -2A.M)

The Benefit Concert and Video Mix Dance Party features performances by popular local artists such as Kim Davis, LEH-LO, Natosh Monroe, Art of Fresh (Slakah the Beatchild & D.O), Natasha Waterman, Shi Wisdom and more. Music provided by Canada's #1 Video Mix DJ - Ritchie Royal Touch, and hosted by Stokes. The Benefit Concert and Video Mix Dance Party begins at 10P.M with doors open at 9P.M. Tickets cost $25 (Advance) and $30 (at the door).

Are African Artists In North America, Being Culturally Suppressed In the Music Industry?

Music is considered the Universal language, these days you can hear songs in Spanish being played on commercial English popular radio stations, by such artists as Pitbull or Marc Anthony. Dance European tracks sung in German, Dutch, Italian and more, are normally heard on radio. Yet, there is one musical culture considered the origin of most rhythm in our society today that hasn't had much of a breakthrough in receiving commercial radio play; African music.

Of course there are shows, or hours dedicated to African music, but it is hardly fused into the popular radio shows. For argument sakes, lets define African music as any music by an artist born in Africa, sung in a local native language and/or mixed with English. Thinking about it, how many times have you heard what has been defined as African music on your favourite radio station? The only one I can remember, was a recent one entitled "Waka Waka" by South American songstress Shakira, which I'm sure you'll agree we can't really call African music. It was a commercial song anthem to market the World Cup, held in South Africa this Summer. Digging more into this discussion, lets learn more about how some young artists born in Africa, yet residing in North America are trying to break into the music market.

Artists born in Africa, but reside in North America find it hard to tap into the commercial music industry. Slim Flex, a Ghanaian-born 24 year old, who lives in Toronto, Canada is highly popular within the Ghanaian community for his Hi-Life songs, sung in his native language of Twi. In addition, he is an English R&B singer, with songs comparable to hit artist such as Usher and Justin Timberlake. Although Slim-Flex has this exquisite versatility, the identifyible characteristics associated with him in the music industry, is solely as an African artist. It is not to be said that he is any way rejecting his African identity, but rather he finds it harder to break into the commercial music industry as a "Canadian" artist.

"It is tough, I'm talented and I want my music on commercial radios, I want my music videos to be played on Much Music and MTV, but it's hard because I have an accent, I just came to Canada and I'm known mainly for Hi Life music." - Slim Flex

J-clippa aka Osagyefo, another Ghanaian artist who lives in Toronto, Canada, is a Hip-Life artist (mix of hip-hop with tradition African rhythms), is signed with Hype Records. He sings in his native language of Twi as well as English. His debut single entitled “Check My Walking”, has an official music video shot and produced in Toronto ( music video link). “Check My Walking” is sung in a mix of the languages Twi and English, which makes it a fusion track. Although “Check my Walking” was shot in Toronto , Canada, it is now considered “World Music” according to industry standards. Rejected by Much Music, the high quality video is welcomed on a new music video program produced by African Movies and Entertainment Television (AMET TV). Thankfully, another Canadian based African Television network will be launching by 2011 entitled TelAfric Network Television that will bring showcase African music videos, and artists across North America.

Artists as Slim Flex and J-Clippa will have to work hard to get recognition in the music industry as popular North American artists. Akon is the perfect example of what can be done. Prior to the super stardom he has now, he was the "African artist" who crept into the Hip Hop industry. Presently, he is on top of his game as a successful platinum Global selling artist with his own record label and the biggest current star under his wings; Lady Gaga. Akon has paved the way in music for all African artists, but the question remains; is there room for another African artist to make their way to the top? Must they conform to music industry standards as Akon did? Or can they be authentic to their craft, and be accepted on commercial popular radio?
