We buried the "N" Word, does anyone care?
Officially yesterday, the NAACP has buried the "N" Word in a mock funeral in Detroit, Michigan. I knew it was going to take place a month previous as I had gotten a press release about it, and actually considered driving 4 hours to Detroit from Toronto, to witness this historic event. It definately needed to happen, as I'm not a fan, neither do I accept or promote the use of that word, which degrades a group of people. Although, I forgot that it was taking place yesterday, I read on www.bbc.com that it had happen! So, I was happy to see that the BBC gave some coverage to the event, but what happen to our favourite "African-American" bloggers, and hip hop new websites? There was no coverage of the event at all! Allhiphop.com, concreteloop, bossip.com etc.. Is there an interest? Do we not care?
The event itself marks a fabulous consciousness among the African-American population, more so among the older population rather than the younger, who have embraced the use of the word as a " self-empowerment". So, its okay for us to use it to express a term of endearment to our "brothers and sisters", to use a word that is created by hate, to limit our capabilities, our personalities, our intelligence into a summery of a "NIGGER" .
Being within this industry that spreads ideologies that misleads a young generation, its interesting to see how the lives of those individuals who lyrically promote hatred, violence, drug use and sexism to be actually good individuals making money from verbal propaganda. Its our duties as individuals to set examples and voice our displeasure.
Without READING, we will always be FOLLOWERS..
