The Honey Jam was brought to you by PhemPhat Entertainment, and the need for the encouragement of female performers. Passing its ten year mark the Honey Jam has grown into a powerful annual event providing the opportunity for Canadian female artists, to showcase their talents. Displaying to Canada that females can be just as great as their male counterparts, although they have received less recognition. The event has launched the careers for artists such as, Nelly Furtado, Jully Black, Jemeni, Melanie Durant and many more. Comparing the Honey Jam from 1995 to now, it is evident that it appeals to the masses, and that female artists look forward to the opportunity of being “discovered” on the Honey Jam stage. With all the economic issues being faced by the organizers this coming year, they still had an eagerness to host and recreate the experience yet again.
Here ends another round of auditions for the Honey Jam event 2009. It was June 14th, a hot Sunday afternoon where the musically inclined gathered to watch talent after talent express their vocals and musical skills a supportive crowd and the jury of judges. We stood in awe, laughter and confusion as act after act took center stage and showed their artistry. Some talents were definitely the roses of the bunch, with voices of angels or amazing punch lines that had the crowd pumped with excitement. Then there were talents that just couldn’t make the cut, who seemed to be a little less fortunate with their talents. The support and energy that jammed the room was positive and created a comfortable space for the singers, rappers and all round entertainers. The event surprisingly progressed rather smoothly and precise, those auditioning were comfortably given an equal amount of time with not one act of favouritism.
According to pioneers of Honey Jam there wasn’t nearly as much talent or people auditioning as there has been years before. But, as I stood in that room it was hard to believe with barely any arms space behind the judges and the precious gifts of talents that pour from each female that stepped on to the stage. Due to this event you were able to see the real female talents that grace Canada. Female artists whom were usually undermined by a male dominated industry, were giving the chance to break the mole and prove to the rest of the world, that Canada has got it all. With powerful women such as Ebonnie Rowe, CEO of PhemPhat; Vivian Barclay and Erika Savage behind this empowering project, even through strife, the Honey Jam will still definitely be a success to look back on, in the future.
